The REALITY AND IMPACT – why is this important:
FirstLight was notified of a family where the middle child who was four had being killed in a farmyard accident. The mother of the child was pregnant, and in a deep state of shock. The older child had witnessed the accident. FirstLight arranged child counselling for this sibling, and supported the mother weekly up to and including during the birth of her next child. The parents were offered a place on FirstLight’s residential programme, due to the nature of their child’s death; they didn’t feel confident enough to leave their other children with babysitters. FirstLight contracted in two babysitters to look after the children while the parents took part in the programme. FirstLight also supported the parents through the inquest of their child.
Their evaluation form of the programme stated that FirstLight had saved the family and kept them together, and move forward with their lives, something they never thought possible.
By donating €250 100 Cork companies can ensure that the 300 Cork families, communities and front line professionals that are affected by this sudden death receive qualified support and information needed when a child or young person dies suddenly.
€25,000 raised in Cork will provide:
100 Home Visits to parents suddenly bereaved
90 individual counselling sessions
62 counselling sessions for sibling support
21 individuals to attend FirstLight Residential Support Programme
1500 front line professionals with bespoke training in dealing with the impacts and implications surrounding the sudden death of a child
