Mile In-Memory Walks 2019
This year’s Mile In-Memory Walks took place on Father’s Day, June 16th, with over 1,200 people attending walks across Galway, Wexford, Kerry, Sligo, Dublin, Louth and Laois.
We decided to hold these walks on Father’s Day as a way to acknowledge the Father’s role within a family during a difficult time after a child has died suddenly. Fathers are often thought of as the rock of the family and don’t usually have the opportunity or feel able to allow themselves to grieve. Having the Mile In-Memory Walks on Father’s Day allowed families to come together and not only support each other but to focus on the Dads who often stay in the shadows, giving them a moment to reflect for themselves, with the comfort of friends and family around.
This special event commenced with poetry readings and bubble blowing before walks inside parks, on beaches, and shorelines around the country. Later in the day, many enjoyed having picnics, indulging in cakes and in at least some locations, bathing in sunlight. It was a fantastic day filled with love, laughter and tears as stories were shared, and hearts were filled with gracious support.
Once again, we want to sincerely thank everyone who volunteered their time to host one of the many Mile In-Memory Walks around Ireland, and to all who participated during this special Father’s Day event. The day would not have been a success without everyone’s generosity and support towards each other and towards FirstLight.
