Welcome to the new FirstLight online therapy and counselling facility, which has been developed in response to the current COVID-19 restrictions.The purpose of this facility is to ensure FirstLight can continue to provide free professional therapeutic and counselling support to suddenly bereaved parents and families throughout Ireland.
We have put in place the technology to allow our Clinical Services Director, Georgia Howard and our team of counsellors and psychotherapists meet in a virtual way with bereaved family members, provide counselling and psychotherapy sessions, chat with clients about their concerns, and respond to questions.
These services are provided in a secure, safe and virtual space and you can avail of these services from the comfort of your own home. Like our Face to Face services, our online services are provided free of charge.

Welcome to the new FirstLight online counselling section, which has been developed in response to the current COVID-19 restrictions.
Established in 1976, FirstLight provides crisis intervention and free professional counselling services throughout Ireland to bereaved parents and family members who have suddenly lost a child up to 18 years.
All FirstLight counsellors are all fully qualified and accredited counsellors having successfully completed the necessary education, exams, training and practice. All of our counsellors MUST be fully accredited and Gardaí vetted prior to supporting our families.
All FirstLight counselling is free of charge however as a charity we welcome any/all donations where possible.
The professionals who work through FirstLight are fully accredited therapists. However, while the FirstLight video counselling service may have similar benefits, it's not capable of substituting for traditional face-to-face therapy in every case.
You can get counselling in four ways:
- Chatting live with your counsellor
- Speaking over the phone with your counsellor
- Video conferencing with your counsellor
You can use different ways at different times as you wish, based on your needs, availability, and convenience
You will sometimes want to have a text conversation with your counsellor in real-time. This way you can still enjoy the convenience and privacy of messaging but also enjoy a "live" interaction that allows instant response and feedback from your counsellor.
To have a live chat session, you will first need to schedule a time with your counsellor. At the scheduled time, on this page, click on the "Click Here to Speak With a Counselor" button at the bottom right corner of your screen. Then start typing and chatting with your counsellor.
Phone sessions are a great way to conveniently speak with your counsellor, no matter where you are. To talk with your counsellor over the phone, you will need to schedule a time with your counsellor and log in to your counselling room at that time. The counsellor will prompt you to start the phone session and the system will ask you for your phone number. The system will then call you at that number and connect you with your counsellor to start the phone session. Please note that the phone number you enter will not be shared with the counsellor.
You can also have a video session with your counsellor where you see each other and talk with each other in a virtual face-to-face setting (similar to Skype). To talk with your counsellor via video, you will need to schedule a time with your counsellor. Then on this page click on the "Click Here to Speak With a Counselor" button at the bottom right corner of your screen. Then start typing and chatting with your counsellor.
The counsellor will initiate the video chat. After you confirm, you will immediately begin video chatting with your counsellor.
FirstLight are very conscious about ensuring the privacy of our families. This is again reflected in our video counselling service which we have built utilising state-of-the-art technology, operation, and infrastructure with one thing in mind: protecting our families privacy and safeguarding the information they provide. Our privacy and confidentiality standards are by far more advanced than what is required by law or regulations, so you can feel safe and comfortable.
Everything you tell your counsellor is protected.
- All the messages between you and your counsellor are secured and encrypted by banking-grade 256-bit encryption.
- Our servers are hosted in an "A Grade" facility, ensuring the best-in-class security and protection.
- Our browsing encryption system (SSL) follows modern best practices, providing world-class online security and encryption.
- Our databases are encrypted and scrambled so they essentially become useless in the very unlikely event that they are being stolen or inappropriately used.
If you wish for any of your information or records to be released to a third party, please let your counsellor know. Your counsellor will send you an authorization form that you will need to fill and sign before your information can be released.
