A reduction of 75% in the Irish SIDS rate following successful intervention campaigns by the National SIDS Register has led to a corresponding reduction in Ireland’s overall infant mortality rate (IMR) to a record low rate which is currently among the lowest worldwide.
The main objectives of the NPMR are to develop an ongoing system for compiling, analysing and reporting detailed information on all paediatric deaths in Ireland, and to build a national epidemiological database of the various causes of childhood death, enabling trends and events to be tracked accurately in a timely manner. This includes identifying the most prevalent causes of death, their geographical distribution, identification of high risk groups and any associated modifiable risk factors.
Our analysis to date has shown that between 2006 and 2011, 32% of deaths in children aged 1-14 years in Ireland were potentially avoidable. This database has enabled us to produce a more detailed examination of the main contributing causes. Furthermore, we have conducted the first population based study of sudden unexplained death in older children and established the incidence of both accidental and nonaccidental injury deaths in the Irish paediatric population.
Preliminary details of all deaths in children aged 0-14yrs from 2006 onwards are made available to the register via death registration information and examination of autopsy reports. In addition, information is received from questionnaires and medical records in relation to sudden unexpected deaths following notifications made directly to the register at the time of death. The resulting core dataset provides valuable information on the current status of the national paediatric population enabling population trends and events in a number of pertinent areas such as accidental and sudden unexplained deaths to be tracked accurately in a timely manner. Further development of this national database to include additional epidemiological data on all paediatric deaths will provide the basis for development of intervention strategies aimed at reducing the number of childhood deaths in Ireland.
